From Broke to 6 Figure Business Owner

In 2021, I dropped out of High School. I was the Deputy Head Girl, Leading the way to Dux of my year. From the outside, it appeared that I was doing so well. Beneath it all though, was a depressed, struggling 17 year old. I felt so alone, scared and worried for my future.

After dropping out, I decided to enrol to study law at University - without any scholarships, without a job or any money. I decided to trust that everything would eventually work out.

My struggles really exacerbated when I received my reminder email about rent that would be due soon. Unsure what to do, I deferred my payments to monthly - because I had nothing to pay.

My teenage years were very stressful, I (as many teenagers do), made many mistakes. To some, dropping out with absolutely no plan would have been one of these. At the start of uni, I too felt I had made a mistake.

But, I was determined to prove not only myself wrong - but the people at my High School who had told me that I would fail university should I not finish High School. I knew that it would not be easy, but I was motivated to get to work.

My first task was to find a job so that I could pay rent. I then needed to build my savings, which I did - through another job. At this time, I also started a business and working on my vision: becoming a Maori Millionaire.

I was a broke university student with no real clue for how I was to achieve this - but I had a goal and I was going to stop at nothing in order to achieve this. Which is what I ended up doing. 3 years on, I now run my own business.I've created an extra 5 figures a month income from my business, lost over 35kgs, totally reset my mindset and attitude towards life.

This didn’t just happen though, it took me years to build what I have now - something that I want to fast track for those in my community who desire financial freedom. It does not have to take years to learn these skills, but it does when you start from scratch and have to filter through the world's resources to learn the skills. This is why I started Maori Millionaire - so that I could demystify personal finances, investing and entrepreneurship.

So, what were the key things I did to transcend life’s obstacles:

  1. If you want to get ahead, you’re going to need some cash. Start first with ACTIVE income - the real mahi. Trading time for money. This is not how we’re going to get to the big income months, but we need money to get started.

  2. Save as much of your income as you can. Temporarily, pick up hours if you need to: do what it takes to achieve your goals.

  3. Start a business so that you can stop trading time for money and instead offer services or products that can bring you in an income not reliant on how many hours you have worked.

There’s obviously a lot more in this process - but put simply: you need to create a new income stream not dependent on how many hours you work. Why? Because the amount of hours in a day is limited - but you want an unlimited income. In order to achieve this, you have to think outside of the box.
