The Panel: How is the rising cost of living affecting you?

I was recently included in a panel by stuff. If you want to read the full article, you can read it here:

Te Kahukura Boynton is founder of Māori Millionaire. She is a second-year law student at the University of Waikato.

Are you noticing things becoming more expensive?

I’ve only recently moved to independence and having to manage costs by myself. I’ve always done groceries for my family but only now am I having to pay for it myself. Seeing the cost of basics increase - just milk, butter and bread even definitely makes me think when I use these products. It’s not just “a glass of milk” any more. It’s an eighth of a $4.50 bottle of milk!

I’m feeling the most pressure in the cost of university. No one really prepares you for all the unexpected costs university brings you. It’s the books, course fees, tech...

I’m working on cutting discretionary spending (wants) and boosting my savings and investments. Two years ago, I had a strong “you only live once” mindset whereas now, I tend to think that my actions today will determine how tomorrow plays out. So, all the cutting costs, investing I do today - I’ll be grateful for that tomorrow.
